Growing Clove

Clove trees are medium-sized, reaching up to 8-12 meters in height. Tropical climates with high humidity and rainfall with a temperature ranging between 20-30°C is required for growing clove.

It grows best at an altitude of 800 to 900 meters ASL. The tree requires fertile and well-drained loamy soil, which is slightly acidic, preferably on sloping terrain.

Clove tree require full sunlight for optimal growth and should be planted at a distance of 6-8 meters apart. While clove trees can be grown in containers, they may not give the best results, but is certainly an option when constrained in space.

The clove tree needs pruning to maintain the its shape and encourage new branches, which is needed for better flower bud production.Clove fruit is a small, oval-shaped berry, which is initially green in colour. When ripe, it turns to bright red. The clove fruit is just about an inch in size with a strong, sweet, and spicy flavour.

The clove is primarily used as a spice which are its dried flower buds. The fruit itself is not commonly consumed.

The clove is helpful in treating toothaches and gum diseases. Not surprisingly, clove is a prominent ingredient in herbal tooth paste.
