Grapes are one of the oldest cultivated fruits in history with evidence of its cultivation dating back to 6000-4000 BC in the Middle East. Grapes are among the best known fruits in the world.

Grapefruit is either round or oblong shaped with one to two centimetres in diameter. Different grape varieties are available in green, red, purple, and black colours. These berries have a taste ranging from sour to mostly sweet. Grapes are eaten fresh or used to make wine, grape juice, raisins o other grape products.

Depending on the use, grapes are classified into four general types.

Wine grapes, Table Grapes, Raisin, Grapes Juice Grapes.

However, all grape varieties can be used for any of the four purposes. it's just that some are more suitable for certain uses.

Growing Grapevine

Grape vines can grow up to 30 meters long and its woody trunk can reach 18 centimetres in diameter. It grows in warm, dry climates and well-drained soil, prefers full sun and moderate watering.

Grapevine should be planted 1-1.5 metres apart in well-draining soil that has been enriched with compost or manure. Pruning grapevines is recommended to keep their shape and promote fruit production.

Grapevines take 3-5 years to bear fruit. Layered plants will usually fruit in 2-3 years.

Grapevine can be grown in containers, but it requires frequent watering and may require more fertiliser to maintain its growth.

Grapevines grow best in warm and dry climates. It is commonly grown in Maharashtra, and in all the southern states except Kerala.

Grape fruit taste, nutritional value

Grapes are known to have curative purposes. Studies have shown a high intake of grapes relates to fewer incidences of cancer. The therapeutic value of grapes is attributed to the high level of magnesium present. It assists in good bowel movement. The dark variety of grapes is especially good as blood builders.
